Corporate relations are built on human communication. Whether it is a colleague on the other end of the desk, or you have to present to a room full of relations, human interaction is crucial. Body language plays an important role in this human contact. Did you know people have over 250.000 different facial expressions? Start using them!

body language in business Let’s use a definition from Wikipedia: “Body language is a kind of non verbal communication, where thoughts, intentions, or feelings are expressed by physical behaviors, such as facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch and the use of space.” So, a wide range of options. It is also something that can be summarised by six universal visual signals: joy, sadness, surprise, aversion, anger and fear.

In addition, body language is the most effective way to communicate your emotions and this means it can be of great influence during business meetings. How do you meet a potential client, how do you lead a team or how do you cope with an angry colleague? The right attitude can make a huge difference. This is why we have already mentioned the importance of a first impression in an earlier blog.

The person with whom you are communicating, will only remember 10 percent of spoken information or 20 percent of visual information. If you combine the two, this can be increased to 65-80 percent. So it is extremely important that your body language and what you are saying line up. This is a recurring message in our training: make sure your body language and message are congruent!
